Custom Aerospace Power Supply for Military Aircraft

This custom aerospace power supply was designed for a classified military aircraft program to power a specialized section of electronics. This application required the power supply to operate from the aircraft’s three phase, 115VAC, 400Hz power source. This program required the power supply to provide 2000 watts with a single 28V output. The customer required this design to meet all applicable military standards which are typical for standard or custom military power supplies.

As with all of our military grade power supplies, we design them to meet all relevant military standards and specs. The most common military power supply specs are MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810, and MIL-STD-1275 which this was designed to meet.

Additionally, this application called for the custom aerospace power supply to be sealed and cooled through a coldplate. As with the majority of our standard and custom power supply designs for military applications, we generally build sealed chassis enclosures to meet our customer’s environmental spec. We incorporate a baseplate for easy mounting and the baseplate is also used for cooling which is well suited for this customer’s project. This 2000 watt custom aerospace power supply is designed for an operating baseplate temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The advantage of this approach is the power supply does not require internal fans for cooling rather it focused on the baseplate temperature rather than the ambient operating temperature or the internal temperature rise when determining cooling requirements.
