Custom Military Power Supply – 1000 Watt, AC to DC
Application: Custom military power supply required for UHF military radio for use with ground support equipment.
Project Abstract: This customer’s application required the custom military power supply to be a self-contained, standalone, weatherproof chassis for portability and plug-n-play operation in any weather condition or location. Since this is a military program, this custom military power supply would need to be designed to meet related MIL-SPECs and MIL-STDs. Their basic power need was 1000 watts with an output of 28Vdc which is not unusual or difficult from a design standpoint. The engineering challenge is the high ambient temperature inside the chassis from external ambient increasing and the internal electronics generating their own heat.
The first design objective was to design the power supply to operate in high temp environments by utilizing a high efficiency rectifier and dc output section. Additionally, the components used for this design would be military grade to tolerate high temperatures. The second objective was to design around a conduction cooled baseplate architecture. This would allow the power supply unit to be mounted to a heatsink. The final part of the design was the custom chassis which included an integrated heatsink provided by our excellent metal fabricator.
