The engineering challenge is the high ambient temperature inside the chassis from external ambient increasing and the internal electronics generating their own heat. The first design objective was to design the power supply to operate in high temp environments by utilizing a high efficiency rectifier and dc output section. Additionally, the components used for this design would be military grade to tolerate high temperatures. The second objective was to design around a conduction cooled baseplate architecture. This would allow the power supply unit to be mounted to a heatsink. The final part of the design was the custom chassis which included an integrated heatsink provided by our excellent metal fabricator. Our solution was derived from our three phase military line of power supplies which was designed to be modifiable to meet the varied applications of our customers. The MGPS-3P series is a two board platform which utilizes a front end section and a dc output section. Both boards can be easily and quickly customized meet to specific customer requirements. These boards can be mounted into various enclosures and feature a solid, flat surface area for conduction cooling. This allow the power supply to be conduction cooled via the baseplate and provides the widest operation temperature range. Essentially, we used existing boards to derive the custom aerospace power supply product and mounted the boards into an existing chassis with mil-circular connectors cut-outs. Final assembly was primarily wiring I/O connections to board connections. . The enclosure for this power supply needed to be a minimum IP65 rated to prevent any moisture from penetrating to any of the inside electronics. The particular power requirement for this application was 300 watts with a single 24Vdc output. DSC Power Solutions utilized a pre-existing platform and re-design the PCB to mount into a specific IP67 chassis. The original circuit was designed to operate in high temp environments which made use of a conduction cooling through a single baseplate. This architecture allows cooling through an external heatsink to be attached and to only one side of the enclosure. As with most of our designs, we utilize high efficiency, ac-dc rectifier architecture to produce the 300 watts of continuous power output. Incorporated into the design is an EMI filter section and control electronics board to provide the functional controls to improve input and output electrical characteristics. This custom IP67 industrial power supply is a flexible design and can be adapted to different uses. We can provide output and mechanical variations to meet different customer applications. Some simple mechanical changes are different I/O connectors or a different enclosure style. The output voltage can easily be changed and we can also add remote on/off, dc good, power fail and other common signals. The engineering challenge is the high shock requirement which requires additional structural enhancements to the internal components. Special strapping methods and supports were designed to eliminate component movement. Additionally, this design would be high-temp, military grade components to tolerate high temps.
